What’s the Colonel listening to this week? 1/18/2018

Greetings,

Four years ago, I decided to become an radio DJ to share my musical tastes and hopefully introduce some people to new sounds and artists they otherwise would have never heard of. Due to personal issues, I went on hiatus. While I plan my return, I decided that it’s worth writing my thoughts down and sharing. Music never sleeps and seldom do I, so here’s what I’ve been listening to this week and enjoyed the most. I’ve assembled a Weekly Playlist here.

*Like Spotify Weekly it’ll be a master playlist and updated every week.

Ktfaithful – In My Head (single) – Spotify Link

If you enjoy the music styling of Joji, Sunset RollerCoaster, Rex Orange County and that similar cute sad boi kinda vibes then do yourself a favor and check out Ktfaithful’s latest single. It’s a bop that’s perfect for late night drives to personal romances playlists. I look forward to seeing more from KtFaithful.

Guerilla Toss – GT UltraSpotify Link

This was my introduction to GT Ultra flew and I think it’s a fitting one. It’s a rocking 30 minutes of dance rock that oozes creativity from every pore. It’s brutally raw with it’s lyrics discussing mental illness, drug addiction and then general psychedelic hippie goopity goop. Its topped off with a shine of polish that most bands can never hope to achieve. Fully recommend giving this one a try

2 Mello – Mindstreaming Vol. 1 – Spotify Link

I’m not sure what you’re doing if you don’t know the name 2 Mello, he’s one of the most dedicated and refined artists I know. He’s constantly working on something and it never fails to fall into my heavy rotation when he drops an single or album. Earlier in 2018, he hit us with Return of the Soul which was straight up old school hip-hop but now he’s gone back to more of his chill-hop, jazzy stylings that echo his Midnight Broadcast albums from years past. It’s something that you really should check out.

Daniel Romano – Finally Free – Spotify Link

I love Daniel Romano, Modern Pressure was one of my albums of the year in 2017, so the bar was set high for Finally Free. Does it achieve this? Yes and no, I’ll have a full review at a later date but this is Romano much more subdued. I’m reminded of Neil Young for the most part, it’s got a vibe that just can’t be shaken. The production is very reminiscent of the 1970s, which isn’t exactly new when compared to Modern Pressure. It’s just that Modern Pressure was more psychedelic rock and roll, this more low acoustic twangy.   It’s an album thatdrags you in and holds you until the end with a bear hug that I wasn’t expecting when I first turned it on. Worth checking out.

*Particularly it reminds me of Neil Young – On the Beach – Spotify Link

Alex Lily – 2% Milk – Spotify Link

Alex Lily describes her sound as “sexy psychological thriller”, I can’t help but agree with her. It’s a compelling album that’s driven by killer electronic backing tracks and introspective lyrics that I feel drawn towards. I’ll have a full review for this one up sometime soon.

Tyler Mahan Coe – Cocaine and Rhinestones Season 1 – Website

index

Everyone’s favorite podcast about 20th Century Country Music finally found its way to my ears and I couldn’t be happier. Tyler really has an passion for sharing these stories and his attention to detail is second to none which isn’t shocking from the son of David Allan Coe. If you haven’t listened, do yourself a favor and change that.

V/A – Sound Triangle Records: A Miami Cuban Funk Anthology – Spotify Link

I’ve listened to this album several times before, it just has a way of popping back into rotation. I think it’s an excellent snapshot of how Cuban music and Funk evolve and work together, they certainly stand apart but when they come together it really creates an experience that you can’t help but want to dance to. It features about 2 hours’ worth of music from a wide range of artists, so it’s an excellent album if you want to get your feet wet and expand your horizons.

Pogo – Weightless – Spotify Link

Pogo is an electronic artist that I could listen to endlessly. Every damn song, they put out is so catchy and groovin that if you didn’t want to dance along then you’re most likely a lizard person in disguise. Pogo is also a master of twisting samples together, I think Data & Pricard and Trumpular are two of the greatest examples of twisting things to fit your needs ever brought to EDM.

That’s all for this week.

Cheers,
Colonel Kisling
